I will be going to University this fall, and I am majoring in philosophy! I initially started out as a math major and changed my mind. I decided to change my major to phil. because I really love how it makes me a better thinker, improves my writing, and lets me explore a variety of philosophical topics (I like studying ideas about reality and the mind). My question, in general, is, has anyone else here majored in philosophy? If so why, and are you glad you did?

I did major in philosophy and it does do all those things you mention, but... unless you plan on going on to become a philosophy teacher, I HIGHLY recommend doing a double major in something more applied, or planning to go into a Master's for something more applied. For instance, I am planning now to do a Master's in Library Science. The philosophy background is great for that. But philosophy alone, well, no one is looking to pay people just to think. So go for it, but have a plan on how to make a living, too. Good luck!

I did two years of graduate work in Philosophy and am happy about it. Any major that teaches you to think is worthwhile.

While I'm glad I did it, I'm not the typical Philosophy major, as I have a degree in Math, an MBA and a PhD in finance.

Still -- I'm happy that I've read Kant, Plato, Aristotle and Bertrand Russell.

I currently have philosophy as one of my classes in Harvard, and I think that it's a good class. The class made me better in all my classes that requires rigorous thinking like the Advance Linear Algebra course.
