Only three of the four funnels were real. The fourth was a dummy funnel for looks, and only let out a little kitchen smoke.

The most fascinating story related to Titanic in my opinion is about the novel Futility that was written at least 10 years before Titanic sailed. It is about a large, luxurious passenger ship that strikes an iceberg and sinks on its maiden voyage. The ship in the story is named "Titan."

When it sank the newest thing in entertainment was "moving pictures" or movies as we know them. As a bonus for the passengers they were showing one of the first ever feature films during the trip. The movie they were showing was the original version of "The Poseidon Adventure", a movie about an ocean liner that sinks.

Poor metal casting may have doomed the ship.
The metal in the hull had too high of a sulfur content. In the icy waters of the North Atlantic, the metal was more brittle than realized, so when the iceberg ripped across it, the metal basically shattered.

They made the rudder too small to turn the ship as it was supposed to turn. One of the reasons it could not avoid the iceburgs.

I know that everything leather was actually found intact when it was discovered (purses, shoes, belts, etc.).
