Introspection is looking inside yourself, taking a step back to analyze why you are doing the things you are doing. Having a sense of self-awareness, meaning you are aware of what distinguishes your actions from your thoughts, will enable a person to be more introspective. If you can see what you are doing you will be able to question your motives.
A lot of people do not have the ability of introspection because they are not self-aware. I tend to refer to these people as drones. They are the worker bees that collect pollen and keep the hive running. Although there is no such thing, I refer to us self-aware, introspective types as the thinker bees, the bees that want to improve the way the hive operates.
To increase your powers of introspection you just need to stop and analyze your actions and pay attention to your mental and emotional state - if you're not happy, figure out why. Do you hate your job? Are you lonely? Are you unhappy in your relationship? Then you have to figure out why you hate your job, why you are lonely and why you are unhappy in your relationship. It's a lot of reasoning, logic and deduction, but if you're willing to sit down, take a look inside yourself and think for awhile you will be rewarded with some peace of mind.

Introspection is contemplation on one's self, as opposed to extrospection, the observation of things external to one's self. Introspection may be used synonymously with self-reflection and used in a similar way.

Introspection is sort of taking the time to think about yourself, the people around you, and how you interact with everyone around you. It's not a sport, or something you can practice and develop...it's just observation of yourself and others. Finding the truth, as it were.
Introspection can be unhealthy in large amounts. It leads to brooding, which often leads to depression. Some of the things you might realize might not be complimentary to yourself.

Basically introspection is examining your own personality, but not as it effects anything or anyone outside of yourself. For example, trying to figure out why you are so sad, or why you can't cry, or how to make yourself feel or be a certain way.

Introspection is merely looking inside yourself. . .figuring out why you do/feel what you do/feel. It's only useful so that you can better relate to others. Overuse creates complete self -centeredness and selfishness, and a worthless life. I find journaling to be the best form and most useful because I can express myself well that way and go back to it later to better understand things I did.
