That's ridiculous. Earwax is an internal ear lubricant and traps debris. A cold sore is a virus. They only way to stop a virus is to stop it from replicating. Abreva targets that part of the virus and works pretty well.

Sounds like an old wives' tale but knowing about kernels of truth in some of those tales I looked it up, especially because I wasn't convinced that ear wax is "dirt." This snippet from Wikipedia doesn't indicate other uses for ear wax but it does seem to support that it is medicinal.
Earwax, also known by the medical term cerumen, is a yellowish, waxy substance secreted in the ear canal of humans and many other mammals. It plays a vital role in the human ear canal, assisting in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungus, and insects. A comprehensive review of the physiology and pathophysiology of cerumen can be found in Roeser and Ballachanda [1]. Excess or impacted cerumen can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing.

It worked for me. I don't know why but when I felt a cold sore coming on my lip, I put some earwax on my lip and by the morning the tingling feeling was gone and the cold sore never developed.

There is always the option of buying special eyes tea bags from your local pharmacy or beauty store, but any black tea bag works just as well and is certainly more economical.

Eeewww! Try freezing it with an ice-cube when you first feel it coming on. Just hold the ice-cube on it till it's numb. It's cleaner and it works.
