Make a banner or icon in photoshop and trade with other sites, just stick it in a links section.
There are some search engine auto-adders that are free but they usually dont work or work poorly, the pay ones are the best but like you said, EXPENSIVE.. Your answer, is lots of searching, banner trading, and emailing other webmasters asking them to mention your page, many will do it for a fee. Traditional advertising works as well, just because its on the web doesnt mean that people have to search to get to it right? :) good luck!

Content is key to getting visitors. Higher rankings in Search Engines is also a good method to increase traffic. Lastly you can always affiliate with similar sites.
