Tell them that whoever they're looking for is dead, and then start crying.

You can opt out by adding your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. If any still come through, what I do is put the phone down as they are talking. When they seek a response from you, they will realize you are not listening. I received a funny e-mail about a guy who talked to the telemarketer like he was a cop and scared the telemarketer to pieces! There are some great responses to telemarketers at: http://www.funnydoodle.com/funpages/telemarketers.htm and http://www.citycyber.com/ecard/fun_thing.htm. There are many other great sites too!

Caller-ID works wonders. Plus we're on the national don't-call list.

Act interested, write it all down, get the name, ph number etc.
Then say, "Put me ON the DO NOT CALL LIST"

If they call again they're liable to pay a fine, maybe even pay it to YOU in certain states.

I politely tell them I'm not interested.

If they thank me and hang up it's over

If they continue I simply hang up

Most importantly, put yourself on the Do Not Call List

if they're a financial institution, if you tell them to make sure to put you on the "do-no-call-list." they won't be able to call you for 5 years. the others, i still haven't figured it out... get a cell phone? haha

I say "No thankyou, goodbye " and hang up. They are trained to pester you until you hang up or start swearing and freaking out. Don't feel bad about hanging up.
