Ok Dude, ready? Phonetics is spelled with a P and not an F because it is the study of sound. Phone is derived from greek and actually means sound. I love useless information.

Underwear is called a "pair" for the same reason pants are. When underwear was first designed it LOOKED like pants. Even for women...bloomers had legs. And the term stuck, even if the actual size of the garment in many cases is now just a small snip of fabric.

D...Thank you for the tidbit regarding 'phonetics'. I can use that now when the subject comes up, as it always does if I am around. As for underware...well, 'Raynanne' took the fun out of by trying to give a sensible answer. I can see how it's ok to say a pair of 'bloomers', or a pair of skivvies, along with 'socks', 'shoes' and 'pants', because the terms are plural. And we often use the term 'underware', singularly...meaning anything we wear under stuff. But we don't say a pair of underwares do we? So your question stands.
