I sure hope I can explain this clearly??

You know the mouse-type mechanism on a laptop where you merely roll your finger over the glass and it moves the cursor about? Well how comes it only works for fingers? Example, if you try and use a pen, or another object to move the cursor, it does not move. The computer only responds to people's fingers! How come?

The sensor does pick up other things as well as fingers - it won't pick up some objects because a certain amount of pixels need to be 'touched' specifically at the same time. A pen or other sharp edged surface does not have enough area contact with the matrix of the sensor

The touch sensors in the pad are fairly large and require a lot of surface contact function. If you were to make it to sensitive, say sensitive enough to use a pen, the cursor would be harder for you to track on the screen. Also, by preventing the pad picking up on pointed small objects you prevent people from using them. This reduces the possibility of the pad being damaged by the amount of force contained at the tip of such an object.

I'm not sure about this but I think it's something to do with capacitance. The body acts as a ground and the electric field alters as the finger moves over the trackpad.

I have that on my laptop, too. I always wondered about that. I think maybe it has something to do with the body heat in your fingers. Im not sure

The first thing I do with a laptop is hook up a USB mouse. Nuff said. I hate those touch pads.

sq. mouse? you mean the trackpad. It relies upon on what i'm using it for. I choose the trackpad because of the fact its consumer-friendly and able to apply. For yet a on the spot mouse is greater mushy to apply for a protracted time.
