Baseballs were made on the spot. Some boy would take a wool sock and wrap it around a bullet, a piece of cork, some some part of a rubber shoe. The winding of the wool was an art.
One of the first companies was the Reach & Shibe company out of Philadelphia in 1881. Reach was of the Philadelphia A's and Shibe owned a hardware store. Spadling bought them out in 1889.
Spalding even said Reach on the ball until 1975.
There is an example of probably one of the first balls in baseball was found in a trunk in an attic of a friend of Doubleday. It was hand wound and stiched in a x-pattern.
