My 18 month old daughter has tubes due to chronic ear infections. We were told that they come out on their own within 6 months to 2 years.

I had tubes in for a long time when I was a child. One of them fell out on it's own, and I had the other removed. The hole was too small, so I never noticed the heling process. I was able to hear just fine and there was no pain after the original implant surgery. Seems like it would take less than 6 months though, since I was slapped in the ear in 7th grade and it perforated my eardrum which took about six months to heal with all the ear drops they gave me. The only antibiotics there where in the drops. So I've never had to use the antibiotics for either process. But, my childhood doctor didn't like antibiotics so I had a strong immunes system anyway.

I don't think they remove them. I think that they are straightened to drain fluid better. Ususlly antibiotics for 7-10 days. It is a safe and very common procedure.
