You CAN, but it's not advisable. The seams show through the paint and will be an absolute pain if you or anyone else ever want to take it down (which *will* happen after too many coats of paint!). If the wallpaper ever starts to look ragged, so will your paint job, and even the most subtle print on the wallpaper can unexpectedly show up under the paint. Take the time to remove the paper!

Yes, but I don't recommend it. It's best to remove the wallpaper first, then sand the wall gently, then paint. My mom painted over the wallpaper in her front bathroom. It was fine until we had a bout of humid weather & it started to peel. I've been helping her peel the painted wallpaper off for the last few weeks. We're almost done, thankfully & can start looking at paint colors again. Wallpaper peels, even if it's professionally hung.

You can paint over wallpaper, especially if the person who hung the paper didn't "size" the wall prior to install the paper. I have ran into this before and I know a little trick I'll share with you. Pull off any loose or bubbled paper first. Secondly, skim all the paper joints (seams) with drywall compound. Last but not lest, apply a painted coat of "Kilz" pigmented primer over the paper. The kilz is oiled based and will seal the paper and prevent the water from your interior latex paint from reactivating the papers glue. Your wall will come out fine and you didn't have to spend countless hours of your time pealing small pieces of stupid wallpaper off your wall.
Good Luck!!!!

MW has the right answer, patch the seam areas with drywall mud and sand, the key to the wallpaper not coming loose is the oil base primer, it will seal the wallpaper against any moisture problems. I done this to our bathroom two years ago and have washed the walls down every spring for the past two years with no problem.

Don't do it! The moisture in the paint may make it peel.
Instead - really easy way to take off wallpaper. Score the paper with a scorer. (Home Depot - $ 5.00) Fill a spray bottle with hot water and 2 caps of fabric softener. Spray the paper. Make it wet. Wait 7 or 8 minutes. Paper will peel off in sheets and not damage anything underneath. If any paper is left, respray, wait, and easy peel off.

it is not advised it ends up looking tacky.
its best to strip it off, they make products for easy removal.
Plus, what if you get tired of the paint. You would have to remove the paint and the wallpaper to change it.
Good luck.

well yes you can but it is NOT recommended. If you want to change the look of your room, i suggest stripping the wallpaper and start fresh - it's a long process but it will look FAR better than trying to cover up wallpaper - people WILL notice.

It's a pain the neck to remove wallpaper right? Steaming it off is the best option, or you can retexure your wall by spackling the whole thing if it isn't a huge area. I did it to two rooms in my house, it's cool and nothing has happened in five years.

Yes but I think you will be much better satisfied with the final results if you remove the wall paper. I'm not going to kid you, removing old wall paper is hard work. One of the best tools I've found to remove old wall paper is a tool called a "Paper Tiger" and "Dif Wall Paper Remover" works well If you do the job yourself. You may need to apply a primer to the walls before painting. GOOD LUCK!
