the egg (if you mean any egg). For example the crocodile egg: "The earliest crocodiles lived with the dinosaurs. The earliest known crocodile ancestor was called a protosuchian. The protosuchian lived about 200 million years ago. It was about three feet long with sharp teeth and covered with bony spines. After the protosuchian came the stenosaurus, which lived about 180 million years ago. Still yet came another ancestor of the crocodile, the deinosuchus, was the first United States ancestor of the crocodile."
Also crocodiles lay eggs: "Female crocodiles make great mothers. The females are the ones that make the nests out of sand, mud, and weeds. Nests are built on the water's edge and are really just shallow holes. These nests are only a few inches high. There are about twenty to ninety eggs in a nest, but most never hatch due to predators who eat the eggs."

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.
Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.
Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg. So, the egg must have come first.

The chicken came first! God made the all the animals to fill the earth and for them to multiply. By laying eggs chickens are reproducing and multiplying as God intended from the beginning of time.

If you read Genesis in the Bible, God put the animals here first, inclusive of fowl. A chicken cannot be born by stself. Some bird has to have the egg.
