Thunderstorms are an occurrence of high pressure and low pressure. When the two zone converge they create ionization of the atmosphere, that is an electrical charge one is positive and the other negative, with the ground being ground. As the two systems get closer to each other, the disruption in the atmosphere caused the discharge of positive electrons across the pressure zones creating a static discharge in the form of lightening, most of the time the lightening strikes from positive to negative between the clouds, however many times the discharge is so massive it goes to ground. Thunder is the sound the lightening makes as it breaks the sound barrier of approximately 720 mile per hour when flashing between positive and negative poles.

Lightning occurs because of charge distributions - a negative charge builds up on the ground, a positive charge builds up in the clouds, and when the charges are large enough, thry equalize with a bolt of lightning. Ever rubbed your feet on a shag rug and zapped someone with a touch? Same principle, but on a much greater scale. The little "zap" you hear is the really tiny baby brother of a thunderclap.

They occur due to discharge of accumulation of heavy static charge in clouds. The discharge path glows due to burn which is lightening simultaneously sound is also caused (due to heat the enclosing volumes suddenly expands like in explosion). But as the velocity of speed is less, the lightening is seen first, thunder is herd later

thunder has to do with the noise made by clouds collapsing with each other and lightening has to do with the effects or something like that. i kind of forgot, it was a while ago i learned that. but they definetly have a scientific explanation behind it...
