On the right side of the carb there is a brass plug (from the factory) that has to be removed to get to the pilot screw. If you are running rich you need to screw it clockwise as you are looking at it (making the screw go "in"). This should change the fuel air mixture so that it is leaned out.
On most Volusia's the pilot screw is usally turned 2 - 2.5 turns out from being seated.

If you want to look like you are riding a Harley but can't afford one, okay, but if you want something different and you are not broke, buy a Moto Guzzi California. You will find that it has much better handling and really good brakes (Guzzi's sporting heritage coming thru) and is just as economical and good looking. It also has shaft drive makes a wonderful sound and is vice free.

Slowpoke beat me to directing you to the VR board. Awesome group. The Vols had a tendency to be set up to run rich out of the crate, if I remember correctly...couldn't tell you why.

Have you checked the air filter or fitted a new one first? Or did you mess with the exhaust system
