oooh.
Nirvana stood out with a much more raw style but Kurt killed himself so being too much of a pansy drug addict to handle life, they're out.
Alice in Chains had some the best harmonies in their music between Layne and Jerry Cantrel, but all of their songs but a rare few were about Layne's drug addiction which ultimately killed him. Unfortunately they're out too.
Soundgarden. I personally believe that Chris Cornell has one of the best singing voices. His ability to sing hauntingly deep and soulful to instantly screaming but not sound like he has a frog stuck in his throat is amazing. I actually liked Chris Cornell's solo album Euphoria Morning more then I liked some of the Sound Garden stuff and since he's gone with Audioslave I've lost a lot of interest. so they go in the number 2 spot
I'm going to say Pearl Jam because of the fact that they're still together and still recording. Eddie Vedder, though an idiot in his nonpolitical views, has managed to stay out of the lime light and keep it about the music for over 15 years. Ten was one of my favorite albums of all time and I can still listen to it from beginning to end because the songs our somewhat timeless and the fact that they are still able to rock out today just as they did before they made it huge, that's what grunge was all about...the music. They exemplified that always and that's respectable

That is a hard one, because those bands rock!! Not so much the Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins, but the top four are all awesome. It's weird that you picked these because those are like my favorite bands of the nineties. You must be somewhere between the age of 25 and 35.
Nirvana has always been my favorite band. Kurt Cobain was my idol, when he died, that was really hard for me.( I know Courtney killed him!) They started the whole grunge thing. So here is my order. 1. Nirvana 2. Soundgarden 3. Pearl Jam 4. Alice in Chains.
As far as talent goes, I would have to say that Chris Cornell is the best singer.

As a huge fan of all things grunge, after the first one, it gets a little harder to say whos better.
1. Pearl Jam
2. Alice In Chains
3. Smashing Pumpkins
4. Soundgarden
5. Nirvana
6. Stone Temple Pilots
7. Live
8. Seven Mary Three
9. Temple of the Dog
10. Foo Foighters
I have always been a huge Pearl Jam fan so I pick them as the best. I could add another 10 bands to the list as well. The fact that Pearl Jam is still around also speaks big for them!!!

Thats a toss up between Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Both were brilliant, with their own unique sounds. Both wrote about better things than their milkshake, bananas, or laffy taffy. Both bands were destined to continue to make great music then tragically it all came to an end. Either choice could be the best, but both band's music will continue to honor their memories for years to come.

AIC. Why? because there will never be another Layne Staley. He had such an unique and haunting voice. You mix that with Jerry's harmonizing and excellent guitar work and you have the absolute best band of the early 90's
