Maybe he is going through a hard time or mid life crisis or something and its making him think about his past. Maybe you were someone in his past that treated him well and he feels like he screwed up. Why not talk to him and find out ?

It sounds like he wants to connect with his son; right his wrongs (so to speak). Before giving him that opportunity, you should speak to him in depth so you have a clear understanding what it is he wants and why now. Also tell your son that his father called, so he can decide whether or not he wants to connect with him. This can be great for all involved. Questions will get answered and resolution/healing can happen. Don't expect that he has his act together after all these years, but at least the truth can come out. And if it's happening now, then it is now that it's suppose to happen. God is always on time.

He could be finally feeling guilty, or he could have discovered he has a debilitating disease and is facing the bitter truth of mortality, and wants to try to find some forgiveness, or finally get to know his son before it is too late.
