Chicago's a big city, with a larger metropolitan area. There are many reasonably priced hotels. To better answer your question a bit more information could have been provided.

For example: you're coming to Chicago to attend the Film Festival, or the Jazz Fest or you want to see something out west or Great America before it closes for the season.

For downtown hotels there are several "reasonably priced" options. Of course, what are you willing to accept?

For Great America -- which is in Gurnee -- I doubt that anyone would suggest a downtown hotel, even though you could take the train. Why not just stay closer to the park?

And, assuming you're flying, are you coming into Midway or O'Hare? Why send you to a hotel in the opposite side of the city, unless you're visitng with people who live there?

Any suggestion at this point, with insufficient information to better help you (and yet without compromising your right to privacy) is a shot in the dark.

Consider the travel websites, pick three options and then ask our advice. We can then help you with distances, travel times and areas to avoid due to construction and what not.

I would suggest the north suburbs of chicago. They are way cheaper than staying in the city and is about a 20 min ride to the downtown. It really depends on where you would like to go and see when you are in the city. If you are not going to be renting a car, then staying within downtown is your best bet
