Hermione already explained to Hagrid that all the Time-Turners were destoyed at the Ministry of Magic and that's why they couldn't fit in taking Care of Magical Creatures with him this year. Besides, as Quietman explained (with a typo), nothing was changed when they used the Time Turner in book 3. Even in the first time loop, they were already being affected by their later-loop selves, which they finally understood when they went back in time to do it over. This means that Buckbeak didn't die in the first loop, and Dumbledore meant that the three could also save Sirius by going back in time, as he already knew that Buckbeak had been saved.

This should show that J.K. Rowling is a genius in her ability to craft perfectly ambiguous descriptions which can be interpreted one way from Harry's point of view, but which can also mean something else once we are provided with additional information.

All the time-turners were destroyed at the end of book five when Harry and his crew went to the Ministry of Magic (though you'd think they could make more -- after all, they can do magic).

Besides -- Dumbledore isn't really dead -- he just took some "draft of the living dead' potion. You don't think JKR would bring it up in the beginning of the book without a purpose, do you?

No because if you think about it, it would really screw up the future, don't you think? I think Dumbledore really is dead and it was part of a plan to push Harry onwards. Also, I don't think harry would be able to get his hands on a time-turner. Weren't all of them smashed in his 5th year? I doubt that any of the teachers/instructors would let him, either.

That would be a brilliant theory, but no, Harry and Company got all of the Time-Turners smashed at their battle in the Department of Mysteries in book 5.

He doesn't have it anymore. Time-turners are carefully controled by the Ministry of Magic and it would be totally against the rules to use it for such an event.

Umm, hello, weren't all the time turners destroyed when they went into the ministry?

No, Hermione gave it McGonagall and plus, if he COULD use it, the ministry would stop it and DUmbledore wouldn't be dead due to cause and effect,

Not really. Whatever is, would be again. They'd just be there to witness it. Not change it. If you noticed, notice was CHANGED when they used it last time. It simply explained how things ended up the way they did. :)
