Are they all lazy? Are they drug addicts? No family? Homeless as a profession? I have seen some begging for money who I know can wash cars, bag groceries, pick strawberries, etc etc. We have immigrants traveling thousands of miles to America, not speak a word of english and earn a decent living. Your thoughts....

I agree with you, some might have had serious problems in the past, but just the other day I saw a young guy (couldn't have been older then 25) who was begging on the side of the highway. He had a mohawk, chain belt, all the accessories needed to get that "punk" look, if you can afford to dress according to a fad, you should be able to work. So yea...drug addicts mostly I guess.

Sometime medical issues, mental, phyiscal issues. Failing to have prudent reserves of cash.

the jobs you are talking about require several things to get the jobs the 1st being an address.

I will give you an example. I had my own business making good money and then I had a stroke.

disability took care of some things and I had to much income to get help from the state. It took Social Security 16 months to kick in so I could have any livable income.

I was lucky I was about 3/4 months from being homeless and in the same postion.

well, its just my experience, but i worked at Riverview hospital for the mentally insane, and as they closed wing aftter wing due to budget cuts, the poor residents were booted out in the streets. now, most of them cant even remember WHAT meds they are on, let alone when to take them and how to get them etc etc. And most of them CANT wash cars or bag groceries. I mean schizophrenics, for example, have no grasp on OUR reality- and see ppl and things that arent there. they could be a danger to themselves or others when put in positions of responsibility ( eg working the fry vat at a burger joint) or things like that. Or imagine being the employer at a strawberry farm and having an employee who thinks all the fruits are actually giant bugs, and they squash 1/2 of your harvest! there is no easy answer im afraid :(

Not all of them fit the drug using, mentally ill profile. There are some people that come from oppressed families, some people may have made a wrong choice in their life at some point (it happens to all of us, maybe not to this extreme). I tend to understand most of them as I was once homeless myself.

A lot of times, they can't afford current living situations, and they have no one to turn to, so they are forced to live out on the streets.

There are also cases where people choose to live on the street.

I wouldn't say they are lazy; many of them are unfortunate.

I'd be willing to bet that most homeless people suffer from some sort of mental illness.
