What kind of model?

High Fashion models are generally 5'9" and taller, and not over about 120 pounds at that height. They need to be in great proportion, great shape, and have an expressive face.

Commerical models can be shorter, but they must have an amazingly commerically beautiful face and their body must still be in proportion. This type of model encompasses catalogues and sunday inserts (think Mervyns, JC Penny's, etc). It also helps to be able to read and speak well for commericals.

There are some models who specialize in certain things, so if you are very tall (5'10" +) and very thin, but your face isn't that great, the Runway may work for you. You still have to be somewhat attractive, but you don't have to be gorgeous.

Fit models are generally 5'8" with curvier proportions, but they just try on clothes and stand there for alterations. They aren't really 'face' models.

Warnings - if you aren't in any of these categories, you still may be able to work in a small town setting. However, don't let someone take your money and lead you along. A professional high-end agency will not make you pay for classes, nor will they overcharge you for pictures. If you are still young, you can get away with a few pictures when you go on go-sees. You then build your portfolio (your book) with your work (tear sheets).

Be realistic with yourself and market yourself to the right place. If you are only 5'6" and 125 pounds and your agent tells you you can be high fashion if you take runway classes and spend $1000 on a portfolio, look for a different agent.
