When you breath in several things happen
first your diaphragm descends and the muscles between your ribs contract. this makes your thorax bigger
The pressure inside your lungs lowers and this makes that the air in the ambient starts entering into your lungs (The lungs are sucking the air in order to increase the pressure inside them)
when air enters it is made of oxygen and nitrogen (You-ll only use oxygen, nitrogen is useless but it comes in the mix)
when oxygen reaches the alveoli (Small bags in which the oxygen enters in contact with the blood)
Then oxygen starts entering into the blood but at the same time the space that it was occupying its filled with another gas that comes from your blood (Carbon dioxide) which is waste.

So the things goes like this when you breath in your rib cage gets larger, the pressure in your lungs gets lower air enters into the lungs, oxygen in the air enters into the blood and carbon dioxide fills the space left by oxygen and the pressure in your lungs has increased because now they are filled with air.

The diaphragm in the chest cavity flattens out. That causes low pressure inside the thorax and air comes in through our nose/mouth. Oxygen is then exchanged in the Alveoli with carbon dioxide and then the muscle relaxes and we exhale.

Our diaphram contracts to expand our lungs bringing oxygen through our nose, down the esophagus, through the bronchial tubes and into our lungs. The lungs filter and allow the oxygen to enter our blood streams to be distributed to the rest of the cells in our body.
