Paris Hilton - the stereotypical American. Like someone else posted before me: rich, flashy, arrogant
For the real America: I'd like to say Tom Hanks

Personally, I'd say Tom Hanks. His choices for parts in films shows that he has a deep appreciation for our past, and people who demonstrated true courage and heroism. Also, for his organization (years ago) to gather funds, and petition for a federal WWII memorial. (there's been state memorials, and mem's for battles, but not one saying "thank you" to the folks who fought WWII)
In a reader's digest interview of him, he spoke about when he was 18. He worked with a WWII vet who participated in DDAY. When he learned this of the guy, it was like an epiphany. "Here was Frank, who at the same age I was. He saw his buddies die in front of him, saw the worst horrors imagineable. Here was a guy and a group of guys who, without asking for thanks, whent and literally saved the world." he explained further: "The troubles on my mind when learning about Frank, suddenly became the minor bumps they were. I think we should look to the "Franks" as an example of what we should strive to be. We owe them more than we can ever hope to be able to pay"
