I work for HP Canada, and when I look at your computer, the most RAM it supports is 1024 MB (1 Gig). We recommend a minimum memory total of at least 512MB. but you may want to install even more, especially if you work with several programs at a time or use memory-intensive software, such as image-editing software.
(Keep in mind that sometimes BIOS updates and other hardware configurations can alter memory recommendations.)

I've been told that you never can have too much ram.
I would take the amount of ram you need to run the program you plan on using on the laptop and then double it. That should do for some time but computers keep getting better and fast and need more ram every few months or sometimes every month.
Just read the specs on the laptop and make sure that it can handle the amount of ram you want to add to it before you do anything involeing the ram.

Are you effective its a Compaq Presario 2100 pc? once you've an Pentium 2.4 Ghz Processor, the generating unit specs coach that 512MB got here with that distinct variety. that variety makes use of (workstation 2100)266mhz SODIMM chips, that max out at 1GB If this doesnt sound like your pc then seem for a letter in the previous or after the 2100 variety of your pc

If you laptop is PRESARIO 2100US then it has a Maximum capacity of 1GB with 1- 512MB stick in each slot. ANd it has 2 slots. If you upgraded the memory to 512MB from the original 256 then you just need one more 512 stick to have your laptop at max memory. So too much ram would be over 1GB.

Well, there is no such thing about having too much RAM. If you are using Windows XP then 512MB or more is needed for the best performance. I think the real question is how much RAM can your laptop accomodate. Look through your owner's manual for your laptop and, under specifications, it should show you how much RAM your laptop can support.

There is no such thing as "too much" RAM. if you have more than is needed, good. It is extra that may be utilized later. It is possible to have too little RAM. Anymore, anything under 256mb of ram is not enough. Not like years ago where I had a computer with a whopping 4mb RAM

Your laptop supports a maximum of 1 GB of RAM (check the specifications if you don't belive me) anything you add above that will not be available to the computer (sorry).
Hope this helps

The more the merrier, but 4GB is the limit for 32-bit Windows. If you want more than that, you have to use XP 64-bit edition and then you run into a whole new ballpark.

You should get only as much RAM as your motherboard allows. You can find this information in your computer manual.
