....I don't like football. I don't hate it but just can't get in to it no matter how hard I try, and this is especially irksome seeing as the world cup is on at the moment!

Every time there is a match on my housemates invite everyone around for a BBQ (which I enjoy), then a football quiz before the game, which is when I retire to my room.

Is this being anti-social? My presence during the game is not missed by them and we all understand each other, but should I make an effort even though I can't seem to enjoy the sport?

I'd be happy to hear your thoughts but nothing insulting please!

Well, if they don't mind - no big deal, but if there's a whole BBQ going on in the meantime, and you're all friends, it can't hurt to hang out with them just to hang out with them. Unless they INSIST that you take the quiz, and give you a hard time about it, then I can understand leaving. But otherwise, just enjoy the presence of friends. And if you really don't want to, don't feel guilty about it! They'll respect your opinion if they're your friends.

I feel your pain, I am Canadian and don't like Hockey. Some have even called me un-Canadian for that, until I compare my 300 year heritage to their maybe 1st or 2nd generation status, then I give them a punch up the conk for that too. I played Football (American style) and Lacrosse but never took to Hockey. Don't worry, you are not being anti-social, just go find something else to do....may I suggest going outside and messing with the cable box so they can't watch the game....just kidding.

It's a shame for you - but you can't force yourself to be into something. There will be a lot of people pretending to be 'mad for football' when they're not really, they just want to be sociable.
You do right to be honest, and not be something you're not. The footy will soon be over, and all forgotton (assuming England don't win!).
It's good you have understanding mates who realise you're not being rude when you go to your room. Just grin and bear it for the next few weeks!

If you don't enjoy football then you don't have to pretend to. I don't think that you are being anti-social b/c you join in on the BBQ. It's OK for you to do your own thing if they are all into something you are not into.

I'm with you. My situation is different though. My husband loves the sport so I can just go to my room with my book. I don't think you are offending anybody, you would probably break a golden rule and talk during the match or something. Just go to your room, it's the safest bet.

Like you hate the football, so I normally chill out on here with my mp3 player at full blast to hide the yells and screams.
Enjoy the bbq drink and eat lots then you will be too way out of it to care about who is winning and losing.
