A bye week is when a football team gets the week off and doesn't have to play a game that week. It is mainly for resting the players.

In weeks 3 through 9 of the NFL schedule, 4 to 8 teams will not play games on that weekend. This is known as their "bye" week.
Honestly, I think it should be called their "idle" week. As a bye usually means you automatically advance to the next round of a tournament without playing a game.
