Both Sweden and Paraguay will have identical statistics in every department. Will FIFA have to draw lots to determine the runner-up? Both Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago will finish on 4 points and both will have scored 1 goal and conceded 2 goals. Obviously, they drew 0v0 with one each other. As such, they cannot be distinguished from one another. I therefore presume that FIFA will have to draw lots to determine who qualifies? Have any teams ever been in this situation before in the world cup?

There will be a drawing of lots to decide who goes through. Not really fair is it?

Article 31 of the competition.
The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows (this is what you are asking for):
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup

So, in that scenario, I think it'd be a drawing of lots.

In World Cup 1990, Ireland was awarded 2o place by "drawing of lots", Netherlands went to 3rd. Both teams went to the second phase since the format allowed the four best 3rd places to go through.

u did your math very well....I think that maybe since they both will have the same goals made and the same goals conceded they will have a soccer match between T&T and sweden to see who will step up

Trinidad will advance under that scenario.
