It does not matter if he is active or not, ALL BABIES NEED SLEEP! It sounds like he is overtired, this can look like hyperactivity in infants. He is in flight or fight mode, his brain is producing a stimulant to keep him awake. It's almost physically impossible for him to fall asleep and stay asleep right now. You have to provide more opportunities for him to sleep. He should not be spending more than 2 hours awake at a time and should have an early bedtime at night, no later than 8pm, 7 is better. He needs at least 2 naps a day, 15 MINUTES IS NOT A NAP. Two hours is what he should be getting for his age. He should be sleeping about 16 hours in a 24 hour period, when he is well rested he'll be able to benefit more from the awake time he has with you. You are setting him up for serious sleep and possible learning issues as he gets older if you let this continue. Believe me when I say this, I have a home day care and the parents do not believe me when I tell them this, but they are always shocked at how better their child sleeps at night when they are well rested from having good day time sleep.

Hi, I don't know if this is any help but i do have 3 children and another on the way. My middle one used to just sleep for 4 hrs a night and was fine on it right up till he was about 3. you don't say how old your son is.so i will just give you a few suggestions. If he still has a nap in the afternoon try to get him to sleep earlier in the afternoon no later than 1 o'clock and wake him after about an hour or an hour and a half. bath him before bed with a bubble bath with lavender in, Put him in bed and read him a story. put a couple of his favourite toys at the foot of his bed and a book or two so if he does wake up he can play for a bit then settle himself back down to sleep. If he does wake speak to him quietly and put him back in bed with his book and a little light then walk away.
It is very tiring and frustrating to have a child that doesn't sleep, but failing all that if you really need one nights sleep....and i mean only occasionally piriton works wonders....and it was a doctor that suggested that to me..unfortunately my son was immune to its effects and was prescribed a stronger anti histamine for its sleeping effects which got him into a routine and now most of the time he sleeps like a log.
I hope this helps you and you get some sleep soon.

He could be needing to be forced to sleep. My youngest did that and we were way to exhausted. FInally an older person I met at of all places the local McDonalds. (I was looking everywhere for advise) Told me that if a baby does not get enough sleep she will not sleep later because she is too exhausted and nervous. For the next week we fed her when she woke up after 3 hours and put her back down and let hr cry. We went back in after the first 15 minutes, Regave the pacifyer, kissed her but never took her out of the bed. then redid this every 15 min until she fell back asleep. usually about 45 min after being put down. After about a week she slept for 6 hours shraight. And she was sooooooo happy. Now when she gets up she's happy and not grumpy. Her sleeping habits are much better, and she isn't suffering. She is happy and healthy and doing better.

u dont say how old... babies that r breast fed eat every 2-3 hours bottle are 3-4 hours. as they get closer to 5-6 months they sleep longer at night. ask your pedi. if this isnt happening. a bath with camomile or lavender popouri in the room is sleep inducing. sometimes the dr might suggest a feeding of ceral at bedime to start, but usually not before 6 months. Nap when u can and know this is perfectly normal. it will pass soon and you can rest longer then. good luck also american baby.com and other parenting sites have good advice on sleep.

A 6 mo old baby should be sleeping through the night, try warm milk before bedtime also soothing music and no activity that stirs up his body, you can also try rocking him anything that will calm him down and feeding him too much will cause him to wake up wanting to eat late ,put him on a schedule and stick to it, babies will adapt to a good schedule if you keep them on it.I put my girls on a four hour feeding schedule right from the hospital and they adjusted to it ,after a month they slept all night until 6 am from 10:30pm.It can be done ,try it.You are the boss remember babies will make the decision if you let them so be the one to make the decision it will pay off.Being a nurse worked in pediatrics taught me a lot to share to others.

You need to push the doctor to make sure there is no medical issue tell them you want an MRI of the brain. Don't take no for an anwser. It's probubly just the way they are but, you as a mom are in control. does ur baby cry a lot or complain in any way ? also if all of a sudden he does a turn around and ur child wants to sleep it could be some thing wrong in the brain.

Take it from me My baby was ill the doctors kept telling me that she was fine and she had a brain tumor and passed away in feb. this year. I'm not trying to worry you but you are mom and you are the only one that is gonna take of your baby and the only one who can defend them. Take care of your ANGEL

The main reason is probably too much energy derived from his diet. Advice would be to consult your doctor or a dietician. Ensure he has a good routine, sufficient exercise during the day and try to limit sleeping during the day. If all else fails, try feeding him a mashed banana before putting him to bed. It sounds ridiculous but it does work. Without trying to worry you, this could also be an early indication of ADHD. This can also be controlled with a suitable diet.

Do you have a regular bedtime routine? Try giving him half feed a bit earlier than bedtime, then bath him, then give him another feed and pt him down to sleep. He shouldn't need to wake for a night feed, and probably won't be hungry so avoid temptation to feed him if he wakes, try to settle him without. Hopefully after a couple os weeks he will not look for interaction/ feed at night and will sleep through. Also could he be overtired if he's so active? Don't be scared to let him havean afternoon nap still, he could probably still do with one even if at first it's just a quiet time with no sleep. It won't affect his sleeping at night but may help. Good luck.

I really feel for you, it's not nice when you can get no sleep. Before bed, try giving him a little more food, a nice relaxing bath and a cuddle. Try getting him into a routine. If he wakes later, maybe he is thirsty. It is very strange for such a young child not to sleep more. To be honest, it will be a while before you get an undisturbed nights sleep, but you should be getting more than 3 hours!

Try bathing your baby. I have this routine with my 2 month old. She gets bathe at 7 p.m. Then when she is done I feed her. It takes me 3 hours to put her down, but she sleeps through the night. She finally goes down by 10:30 p.m. she wakes up anywhere between 6 a.m or 7. But when I bathe her I use the nightime wash by Johnson and Johnson. It has chamolie this helps my baby.
