You know how computers always slow down after a long time of use? Well, I recently (a couple months ago) completely reinstalled Windows XP on my 700 MHz Laptop (I know that it's slow but it works OKay for my purposes) and whenever I first logged in, it literally logged in 2 seconds. and it stayed like that for a long time, even after I installed my applications. It's starting to slow down again, and there is no virus or spyware or anything like that. I was wandering if there was a free or cheap (preferably 60 dollars or less) program that kind of restores the Windows XP "newness" so that it's fast again? And I really don't want to reactivate or anything. Thanks.

Nope!! Just practice good computer practices and you will not encounter this.
1. Good Antivirus
2. Webroot Spysweeper, locks down the HOST file and restricts any attempt to store anything on your computer without your approval. It runs ALL THE TIME unlike any other spysweeper program
3. Run Disc clean up once a month
4. Run Defrag once a month
5. Reduce the amount of program that start up when Windows launches. From the RUN command type if MSCONFIG. Look at the startup tab and de-select anythign that doesn't need to be there. You will see all of the Winamp, Adobe, Quicktime (and many more) programs loading on startup...THEY DO NOT NEED TO!!!

***This should help you a ton!!

There is no program that does such thing. Its your RAM thats doing all the work. The more programs you add in, the more work your RAM does because its trying to scan your entire hard drive, so its going to slow down, especially as you add more programs. I dont think you want to download something that will just add more stress to your RAMS.

Just install more rams. Go to Control panel and then systems and under the general tab, find out below how much memory you have. If you have either 128MB or 256MB then its time for an upgrade. You wont be able to play games or add too many programs without your computer farting.

To make the most out of your computer, do a clean disk or disk defrag and disk compression whenever you think its getting too slow. Dont add too many programs with less than 512MB of memory. Also, try taking stuff out of your startup menu. Go to START menu then RUN and type msconfig and hit enter.

Go to the startup tab and make sure you uncheck startup programs that might slow down the rebooting of your Windows.

Well, have you tried deleting any programs you dont use? Clean out the hard drive by going to start >all programs>Accecories>System Tool>Disk Clean up also Disk Defragmenter. :] Other than that just dont put to many items on your laptop. Laptops have a tendency of slowing down. But hopefully this will help you

You could use Norton Ghost to create an image of the laptop when it is running well and completely configured with all the programs you need. Then you call copy the image back to your laptop any time you want. Keep in mind that this is a destructive process, so backup your data.

Assuming that your statement of no viruses or spyware is correct, there are some things you can try:

One, CCleaner, http://www.ccleaner.com/ it will clean out your junk files and old registry entries (it's important to have a clean registry)

Two, Cleanup!, http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/ use this in addition to CCleaner to make sure every scrap of junk is removed

Three, defrag your hard drive, either using the built-in utility of Windows or get Diskeeper Lite, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

Four, TuneXP will literally modify the way Windows handles itself, http://www.driverheaven.net/dforce/default.php

Five, remove unnecessary startup items by going to Start > Run type msconfig and go to the startup tab, remove items that are not critical to the functioning of the system or applications you do not need at startup (but can be started manually when needed).

Six, there are two parts to this one, links here, http://xgatech.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1295&keywords=tweak&PHPSESSID=c4aad8f56fac0c3f7391119ea3be9ee5 this is how you can manually tweak Windows XP to run even faster, according to your needs.

Run regularly

Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup

Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Defrag

A minimum 512Mb or RAM. On your computer you may be able to go as high as 1Gb. Well worth the investment.

Good luck.

well after you try all of that stuff, and your computer still runs slow. You need to go get an apple macbook. It's more than 60 dollars but they don't slow down.

Defragment your C drive & if possible all drives. Choose to run only those services that you need & disable others(Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services). Also enable minimum possible start-up programs so that your system stars quickly (Start-Help & Support-Support-System Configuration Utility-Open System Configuration Utility-Startup-Disable All),or select the minimum possible programs that you need at startup, others you can select manually when you need them.
I hope my suggestion helps. Good Luck.

you should check your programs that start in the bottom right corner of your screen when you start your computer. if there are a lot of icons in this area next to the clock then your computer will start up slow. the easiest way to explain how to disable them is to go to the settings of each program and change it so it doesnt begin at startup of computer.

The reason your computer is slow(this may not be the problem though)is because your hard drive has a lot of data.
