Currently...
Tests : Brian Lara
Once he sets himself in.. He looks Invincible.. and The guy can stay at the wicket for days.. and.. still looks as if he has just come in.. Cool head.. no pressure at all..
ODI's : Ricky Ponting
Hez at the Prime form of his career
And Arguably...
The Best Batsman would always be none other than that Indian guy.. Sachin Tendulkar... No One can ever deny his Calibre as the Best batsman in the World.

Ponting in both forms of the game.
He's an even better Test cricketer than one dayer if you ask me.
His form has been remarkable for the past 2 years and if he continues it he will go past Lara and Tendulkar and break more records.
As it is he's on track to be the most prolific Test century maker in the next 2 years. And he's only 31.
Look at his record also in 'important' ODIs, like the World Cup final.
So, at the moment - it's Ponting.

According to me Sachin Tendulkar is the best Batsmaan in both forms of the game...
Simply because he has scored maximum number of runs in ODIs and has scored maximum Centuries in Tests.
By the time he retires he will have all records in his name.
Sachin is the pride of Indian Cricket..

Ricky Ponting is amazing. Lara I agree is a bit better in the tests. I'm out of the loop now that I'm not in Oz anymore...or in a country where they even try to understand cricket (america)
What is the name of the South African kid that played for England...always called him the "skunk", but he was quite impressive batting against Australia in the Ashes.
