VANCOUVER - Herring make farting sounds at night, Canadian and British scientists say.
Scientists knew herring have an excellent sense of hearing, but now researcher Ben Wilson of the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre in Vancouver and his British colleagues investigated their secret noises.
At night, herring squeeze bubbles out of their swim bladders through an anal pore.
The action produces distinctive sounds, resembling a person blowing raspberries or farting.
Wilson is now trying to figure out why.
The fish tend to make noise more often when in the company of others, which suggests it plays a social role, the researchers say.
If so, sound may be more important in herring than scientists had thought, and they may need to look into the effects of noise pollution from humans.
The fish may also produce the sounds to ward off predators. Or it could be an incidental effect of staying buoyant, Wilson said.
The commercially valuable fish live in the temperate waters of the northern hemisphere.
The study appears in this week's online issue of the Royal Society's Biology Letters.

If they poo .... then they would have to fart. Right? Maybe you could do an experiment. 1.) Get a fish tank and add some fish 2.) Hook up a sensitive underwater microphone 3.) Feed fish 4.) Sit back and observe. Let me know the findings. You may be the first ever to attempt this and in doing so you may answer a question that marine biology has not thought to ask. Good luck to you.

Yes they do fart because farting is a body function, without the process of excreting unwanted gases, then fish, well not only fish, but humans, animals, and mammals would not be able to survive.

I actually have a golden dojo loach who i've got faith farted basically a minute in the past. So i became purely sitting right here staring at my aquarium, and that i spotted some thing strange approximately my dojo loach. He became swimming around the backside, and each time he might stop swimming, his tail began floating upward. purely approximately like he became packed with air. It's possible. Humans fart to release a build-up of gases from all the metabolism of the bacteria that live in our intestine. Yes we can bacteria living in our intestine (they help us digest plant material because we can't do it by ourselves). If fish have bacteria living in their intestine, then they can fart. If they don't, then no.

Yes. Called a reflex, involuntary nerve impulse between the muscles of the anal sphincter and the brain of the fish that cause the anus to open to relieve gaseous buildup.

Yes. Every living thing has discharge. It's a natural effect of digestion.
