My air conditioner is off all day while I'm at work, and only on 78 degrees when I'm home. We do not have natural gas, just electricity. We only wash/dry a couple loads of clothes and do one load of dishes each week. Our nieghbors, in the same building, pay no more than $90 per month, and run thier air conditioning all day. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?

My apartment complex sent a matianace person who said nothing was wrong and that we were just complaining. We had the air conditioning checked out, it was fine. Someone told us that it could be a leak in the hot water heater under the foundation. I'm in North Florida and live in the first florr of a 3 story, shaded unit, if it helps.

I live in Florida as well. I'm testing something right now. A friend of mine said she stopped using her dishwasher all together and her electric billed dropped by $40. I'm going to try that with mine. I leave the A/C at 80 all day and pay about $75 during the winter and $115 during the summer.

You might also have some high energy appliances. Look at your water heater and see what the big yellow energy sticker says about it. There is a sticker that shows the relative efficiency of your water heater. Older appliances also use more energy. Consider also how much you run other electric devises. Do you leave lights or a computer on all day? Do you have fans running all day? These devises do not use much electricity, but small amounts will add up.

I live in Central FL, and I'm as frugal as you seem to be. Is your elect controlled by the complex or city? If it's city I'd call the company and have the meter for your apt checked first, then have them do an audit of your service and appliances...Forget what the landlord says but dont fight him about it, until you kn ow for certain, that is isn't a service preoblem with the mon itoring equipment.
