I am being denied a job and services by agencies in Portland, Oregon because employees "think" that they must see my social security "card" and "ONLY" the social security "card" as proof of my U.S. Citizenship. I NEED PROOF THAT THEY ARE WRONG; THAT MY CERTIFIED BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS ACCEPTABLE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP AND AUTHORIZATION TO WORK IN THIS COUNTRY (even if I do not speak Spanish).

Form I-9(Rev 05-31-05) from the US Dept of Labor Handbook for Employers (M-0274), page 3 states that the acceptable forms of ID for proof of right to work inthe US are: US passport, Certificate of Citizenship (N-560), Cert. of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card,, etc OR Drivers License AND SS card or Drivers License (or other form of government issued ID ALONG WITH an original or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by a state or county municipal authority and bearing an official seal. (This means you can't use the one from the hospital with your footprints on it....) Hope this helps.

Have them look at an I-9 form. It is a government form that offers alternatives for a social security card. Sounds a little fishy to me that they want your original SS card. Your ss number plus ID and a birth certificate should be MORE than enough for them. Again, sounds a bit fishy.

They will need to see the card to verify your status for that reason.

To prove identity to work, normally two forms of ID are acceptable including the social securiy card.

Social secuirty cards of course do ont prove citizenship because non citizens can have a card if they are legal to work in the US.

Unless it is a state regulation if you have a certified birth certificate with another form of government identification they can't make you provide an SS card.

Yes they do need to see your SSN# card. This will verify that you are who you say you are. They have to match your face with your social security number. That way it cuts down on Identity theft and keeps track of you for the IRS and NSA.
