I'd do both. Exploring a new town or other location by yourself (assuming that it is safe) is a great way to get a feel for the culture. The benefit of a friend and travel guide is that you get to zero in on their favorite spots, that can be more exciting, but in your case you have to wait for it. When I was stationed in Belgium, I did a little bit of both and truly enjoyed the experience.

Why wait when you're bored? Just leave a note and say that you'll be back to be on the safe side. Tell where you're going. If you've already made friends where you're visiting, call them and have coffee or lunch with them. Go to crowded places to be safe. Use yahoo maps or go to nearby places so you won't get lost. Your options are unlimited.

Depends on how long you have to wait. I would get out and either take a walk or go for a ride just to check things out.

I say get out there! As long as you know the address of where you have to return to and the nearest major intersection, you'll always find your way back. So start exploring!
