Tips: Use them around the world not just in Greece

Make sure that the cab driver turns his meter on as soon as you get in! Do not make 'a deal' with the taxi driver. The cab fare is not negotiable and any agreement you might make with him is going to be to your disadvantage. And he will try hard to give you a 'good' deal! Look at the meter and make sure that it is running at the normal speed. You can determine this by looking for the number '1' or the number '2' in the meter's face. If you see the number 1 then it is correct. If you see the number 2 then it is running at double the normal rate. (The double rate is only applied when you use a cab after midnight or if you take the cab for a trip outside of Athens city limits). If a diagreement should take place, insist on your right to call in the tourist police! That usually resolves the problem! ( Tourist police phone number : 171 or Police number :100)

Base Rate: € 1,05 (approx)
Minimum Fare: € 2,50
Airport Area Surcharge € about 1.50 (I'm not sure because it changed some days ago)
Luggage Handling, per piece € 0,15 (or 0.25 it changed some days ago)
Calling for An Immediate Cab by Telephone:€ 1,50
Calling to Arrange an Appointment for Pick-up€ 1,80
Remember:Late/Early Trips: Between midnight and 5am, expect to pay at the "2" rate. The meter should be set to "1", the cheaper rate of about € 3 per ten kilometers, during the hours of 5am to midnight. Outside of towns and cities: About € 4/5 per ten kilometers or about 6 miles approx (Be careful: Jam not included and if you are in jam taxi will cost you much more).

Day cost airport-Athens €25 Night approx €40-€50
