Am I removing the paper from tin cans (before recycling them) for nothing? What happens to cans that have the paper still on? Are they recycled, thrown away or treated in some way?

Removing the paper is unnecessary in terms of the process of recycling. Metal gets melted down and any paper gets burned off in the process. The reality is that you don't have to clean the containers out either, it's more of a hygiene issue. If you go several days or weeks between material pickups/dropoffs you'll run the risk of critters getting into your recycling or developing swarms of mosquitoes every time you open your container. Hope this helps!

I recycle the cans, I wash them so they don't stink or get maggoty whilst waiting to be collected. I take the labels of because that's what it said to do, other that that I don't know why.

I hope they are being recycled and not just dumped according to the adverts all my cans should now be a car or an aeroplane.

I share your thoughts, I even wonder why I am washing them, surely anyone 're-using' them would wash them/ melt them down.
Plus (rant here!) I gather a lot of it doesn't get recycled because it is uneconomical or it gets sent to China or somewhere and buried/incinerated there! I want to recycle, and do, but rather cynically!
