I was surprised to learn that neon lights are apparently illegal to have on your motorcycle in Wisconsin. I guess they're ok if you're parked, but not while you're moving.

Where can I find more info on this law? I'm usually good at researching, but I can't seem to find the details on this one. I don't know if it's DOT, in the statutes, or what.

Also, what's your take on WHY these are illegal? You'd think it would be a good thing to increase your visibility......

I didn't get a ticket - I don't have neon. But thanks for the advice anyway. I had just heard of someone who did get pulled over, and it got me wondering.

Most state vehicle laws are based on the Uniform Vehicle Code (UVC) which states that only white or yellow (amber) lights can show from the front of the vehicle, and only red or yellow (amber) lights can show from the rear while the vehicle is in motion on public streets.

Any other colored lights, such as those used by emergency vehicles are only authorized to be used for specific warning purposes.

The various colored neon lights that are popular on show and custom cars and motorcycles are not authorized for use on public roadways, and it is common practice that the packaging such lights were sold in contains warnings that the lights are "For off-road use only."

As far as specific statutes... These vary from state to state, but generally, the attitude for these laws is that if it's not specifically authorized or permitted, then it's not legal.

As for why these are illegal... All the different colors cause confusion and distraction for other drivers sharing the roadways at night.

Neon lights are illegal in the US. It doesnt matter what color u put under ur ride, it is causing distraction to other drivers on the road and you will get pulled over by the first cop that sees it. Having neon lights for car shows is okay and if the car is parket. If you drive around with them then your asking for a fix-it-ticket. I've made experience. I have a blk toyota supra with blue neons. Got pulled over the first night.

Depends on the state and/or locality you live in. Generally the lights must be off and in some cases also covered when the vehicle is in motion. The law can be found in state or municipal codes.

Red and blue neon lights might be banned altogether due to them being the colors used by emergency vehicles so check the law carefully carefully before buying. You can also ask the police department what law (s) cover that. They have

It's illegal in Illinois too, because it causes distraction and may cause accidents.

Different states have different laws. Illinois has very strick laws when it comes to Lighting on cars. no color turn signal, no neon lights, and the list goes on.

They pose a distraction to other drivers. It's also illegal to drive with lights inside a car while driving. They pose a danger i guess, i dont agree with the law but its there. I'm sure if you take it to court you cant fight it off to a warning by using the truth as your facts.
