The reason is so that racers are crossing the field of vision going left to right, which is standard convention for western societies (just like reading). BTW, counter-clockwise is the standard in Europe as well as for the Olympics (a European invention) and only the kooky British drive on the right side of the road while the rest of Europe is on the right like us.

Thats a great question. I only like to run counter clockwise because it gives be a better feel of the track for competiton. I do admit though, I do not like turning right when I run...

The clockwise route for some interest like NASCAR interior reason obtrusive. because the motive force is on the left element of the vehicle (in this u . s . a . a minimum of) utilising counterclockwise factors you a huge variety of proper advantages: drivers are shelter detrimental to the wall on banked turns, they have more effective helpful visibility on the left element of the vehicle the placement optimal persons bypass and the realm of the motive force is conducive to the proper results of centrifical stress. because the boys from down below (Australia) have the guidance wheel on the right element of the vehicle it in reality is wise that they couldchronic clockwise. :)

I've never really thought about it. In fact, when I run outside, I tend to alternate between running left-turn loops and right-turn loops. But at the track I always go with the flow, which is to turn left. Huh.

If you are talking about running in competition, you run that way because the rules say you do.
IAAF rule 163 states "The direction of running shall be left-hand inside."

I heard this is something America does to be opposite from our old country across the pond. I don't remember the details, but it's been that way for years here.
