Get a decent personal firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio and ensure that you know every program that tries to make an outbound connection. If it looks strange, deny it. Even if you're unable to remove the key logger from your system (which most anti-virus programs and ad/spyware programs are capable of doing), preventing the outbound connection will prevent the logger from sending its data back, so it would never do you any harm.

It is next impossible to ever be certain of keyloggers. They are very hard to catch and remove. Especially since keyloggers aren't just software based... they can be hardware as well.

Short of pen and paper some alternatives are using a live OS, running spyware/adware scans daily with popular antispyware software and using safe browsing habits. It is also important have a safe and secure password on your computer.

Download a program called Ad-aware from a company called Lavasoft.

The 'Se' version is free to have and run forever.

This finds key loggers and stops them.

Don't download anything that seems it has spyware or viruses. Don't open emails that seem like spam they may have that too.
