Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando played the main roles.

Vivien Leigh .... Blanche DuBois
Marlon Brando .... Stanley Kowalski
Kim Hunter .... Stella Kowalski
Karl Malden .... Harold 'Mitch' Mitchell
Rudy Bond .... Steve
Nick Dennis .... Pablo Gonzales
Peg Hillias .... Eunice
Wright King .... A Collector
Richard Garrick .... A Doctor
Ann Dere .... The Matron
Edna Thomas .... The Mexican Woman
Mickey Kuhn .... A Sailor

Blanche is in real need of a protector at this stage in her life when circumstances lead her into paying a visit to her younger sister Stella in New Orleans. She doesn't understand how Stella, who is expecting her first child, could have picked a husband so lacking in refinement. Stanley Kowalski's buddies come over to the house to play cards and one of them, Mitch, finds Blanche attractive until Stanley tells him about what kind of a woman Blanche really is. What will happen when Stella goes to the hospital to have her baby and just Blanche and her brother-in-law are in the house?

Marlon Brando was the lead in the film as the brutish Stanley. It was directed by Elia Kazaan and produced by Charles K. Feldman. It also starred Vivien Leigh as Blanche, the delicate wilting southern flower, and Kim Hunter played Brando's sultry but weak-minded wife, Stella. Karl Malden was one of Brando's work friends and card buddies. As far as I know, Gene Hackman was not in the film unless he had some tiny part. It's such a tragic story written about changing times clashing with the old gentility of the South. It was written by Tennessee Williams, who spent much time in New Orleans, LA, where the play takes place. I love the movie and the play, although the movie cut out some parts that were deemed too controversial at the time such as the fact that Blanche had previously been married to what she later on discovered to be a gay man. TW was gay in real life.

PS - This is not cut and paste, this is my own writing.
