Did they have some kind of pregnancy tests or did they just notice when they started to show?

They stopped having periods just like women today.

One thing that they tried was to inject a female rabbit with a pregnant woman's blood. Then they would kill the rabbit and examine its ovaries. I'm not sure of the specifics but the ovaries would react somehow to the woman's blood. Thus the expression "the rabbit died" became a euphemism for being pregnant. Though, the rabbit in question would die whether the woman was pregnant or not.

the local magician or snake oil merchant, would crack an egg on her stomach then if it was a cloudy day and her feet were dry , she was pregnant.
