You have to teach your kids to be 'net safe. Don't tell strangers identifying things, don't believe their stated ages blindly, those sort of things. It's not a site's fault that paedophiles can pretend to be children, and paedophiles are drawn there because children are.
I'm still using the same ID I did when I first really got into the net at age 16, and I haven't been stalked yet. Personally, I don't think kids or young teens should be making friends online, though I have no problems with them using the internet for study, communication with already known persons or other types of recreation.
I'll finish later, gotta go.

Because shutting down a website is called censorship and the first amendment prohibits this.
I understand the digital world is a scary place. I have always thought of the Internet as more like a bar than a library. Not a great place for kids. Spend sometime at http://www.isafe.org/ and learn what you can do to help protect your kids.
Getting rid of myspace or the rest of them will not solve the problem. If we banned myspace, they would just move their servers to another country. Probably would not miss a week of service. If you get rid of one, two will replace it. The Internet is global; no single government has a chance to fully regulate it.

The program isn't illegal. Only what you download is. Also the fact that LimeWire implants hundreds of virus's into your PC if you don't have the proper setup, sort of gives the oinkers pleasure in knowing you wont be using that program for long. Its to much hassle to use LimeWire

I, as a teenager, know the answer. It's because it's not the only site that has pedophiles and other wrong things in it. The reason it will not be shut down is because there will always be another one wether it be livejournal.com or xanga.com or any other of the million of websites dedicated to teens. There will always be another website for kids that nasty people try to exploit. It's a loosing battle.

Parents need to exercise control over what their kids are doing and what internet sites they are visiting. The Government has no place in deciding where your kids go on the Internet - thats what parents are for.

Your suggestion to shut down myspace is akin to saying "let's keep our kids out of society because of all the crime." I agree with you that it's scary for a parent, but I think parents just need to monitor their kids better. Instead of negotiating or trying to be the kid's friend (not saying you do that), to protect and do what's best for them regardless of their feelings.
Not saying that's easy, either. my 2 cents. :-)

I cant imagine it'd really be that difficult for you to monitor/control the activities of your child on (or off) the internet... it's up to parents to watch out for their children. People in a free society have a right to communicate and socialize... in communist countries, free press is considered "dangerous" also....

when my 17 yr old son made a myspace page, I made one too
when my daughter joined neopets at age 9, so did I
and when she asked at age 12 if she could have a myspace, I told her she has to wait until she is older
if you want the govt to parent your kids, why did you have them?

Freedom of Speech - First Amendment. Plus, the company isn't the problem, it's the people who use it.
