I put my applications in at a couple places about 3 to 4 weeks ago and no one's called yet ... Should I call in and ask if there's been any progress made ? Or is that too tacky ?

That is perfectly acceptable. Politely tell them who you are, and that you just want to check on the status of your resume or application. It shows that you are really interested in the job, and it can help you get noticed.

Yeah, you can call. Call and say that you're just following up on an application you turned in. If they don't automatically give you info, then ask if they are planning on any interview or if the position has been filled. Thank them for the information.
