My friend is a "smother mother" and she claims he won't wean, but I think it is her. She carries him everywhere!

I'd have to say that it's her. Most babies will wean themselves by that age, if they're given regular food throughout the day. I believe that breastfeeding is best, but about the time a child turns 2, it's time to stop. Children need some independance, and they also need the chance to sit at the table as part of the family. This is one of the most important learning times for a child, and her doing everything for him will be a detriment to him in the long run.

IMHO If they can talk they shouldn't be breast fed anymore. I know some mothers go as long as 5 years old. But to me that is bordering on abuse. And will make the kid very mother dependent.
Anyway, I would think the average is like 12-18 months. If the kid can hold a glass then they should be off the breast.

When the child is a year old that's when you should stop breastfeeding. It's just weird to continue to breast feed at 2

The World Health Organization says 2 is an appropriate age. My son is 15 months and I still breastfeed him, and we both still enjoy it. The bigger question is do you still want to continue to breastfeed him? If you still want to and your child still wants to go for it for as long as you want to. If your tired of it then its time to wean.
