if you mean spectroscopy and related fields here's something.

spectrum: variation of intensity with frequency or wavelength.

study of intensity of the radiation. Basically
you have an unkown source of light. You tell what frequencies
(or colours) are how much intense.
Usually it's of the following types

Optical spectroscopy (visible light)
X -ray spectroscopy
infrared spectroscopy
neutron spectroscopy
thomson spectroscopy
radio

spectra can be absorption or emmision.

atomic specroscopy
molecular spectroscopy

all this info can be used to study known materials
and find composition of un-known materials.
health purposes too

Like in spectroscopy?

different molecule when burnt gives off different color's so..by studying the light from any burning object you can tell what its made of
