Actually, since life has been created before art (in the case of when life isn't an art because it could be but for me it's not), I think art imitates life.
To answer more precisely, I would rather say that art represents the beauty of an imagined world. Like lots of people who draw, they draw things that don't exist in the world : i.e. angels, pegasus, unicorn etc...
We even talk about this in books...
but actually life also tries to imitate art since people want to make a beautiful world... in vain...

Art is a visual representation of the infinite possibilities within life to refer to either as an imitation of the other is to lessen both. I might offer the example of the Titanic. Years before the Titanic came into existence there was written a book of a ship matching the Titanic, a world class luxury ship upon whose maiden voyage was met with disaster after hitting a poorly visible ice burg, the book describe with frightening accuracy the events surrounding the actual Titanic. The book only put to words the possibility of this reality, that being said if one looks at a picture, what is seen is not an imitation of life but the possibilities within life

I've noticed that there is both happening in the world. Like Sci-Fi movies aren't going to usually be portrayed by real-life things but relistic fiction is always based off of real-life things that can or do happen in the world today. To answer if people live out what they see and hear in the media, people sometimes don't notice if they are living what they see or hear in the media. Let's say in this one movie a 12 year old is watching there is a lot of swearing. If this kid sees more movies or hears more music with swearing he/she is most likely going to start swearing because they have been hearing this more often. Sometimes they even think that what is in the media is okay to do when really it isn't. So both things happen. I hope that answered your question.

A little of both I think. Sometimes society is molded by the thoughts, ideas or moral values portraid by movies and music, the performing arts. Whereas I think more trditional arts (paintings, sculpture etc.) only mirror life as it already is. However sometimes it can be kinda spooky, almost prophetic. Did anyone see the movie apokolyps with Bruce Willis. When the preliminary meteor shower hit new york. Then that graphic scene of the meteors hitting the twin towers. Then a couple of years later what happened on 9-11. Watch the movie again, it's creepy.

I think it's life imitating life. Reason: before there was the film, media and communication technology, there was life imitating life in what ever shape, form or fashion. Art is life by life.

Is life an art or is art a life? Life and art does not imitate each other, they all one.

Art imitates life because an artists will reveal only what he/she has experienced in life. Therefore the art will be an imitation of him/hers own life.

Art imitates life for normal people. For the psychotic, or the mentally disturbed, their lives may imitate art. When one's life starts to imitate art he should pay less attention to art and more to the real world. Unfortunately, there are people who live out what they see and hear in the media but these people are dangerous to be involved with unless you are a psychiatrist and understand their modus operandi.

i am a painter and a writer. but i am confused by the fact that you consider movies a form of art. the movies are an industry that is only interested in sells. sadly, that model is taking over the books industry as well (see Dan Brown). however life can never imitate art. art can influence you in your life, but it can never imitate art. art, on the other hand, imitates life.

The media portrays what it thinks society would like to see. We as people imitate life because truth is more interesting than fiction.
