The difference is that when a validictorian speaks, he or she represents the school. When the president speaks, he represents himself.

We, in the US, have more freedom of speech than anyone else in the world. Even things like racism and naziism that are illegal in Europe are legal here. My neighbor has "White Power!" and a confederate flag on his truck, and I can't do a think about it. But our freedom of speech is not limitless. I can post online "I hate the president" (which I don't, by the way) but I can't post "Somebody needs to shoot the president when he comes to town next week." There are and should be limits in some cases. But thanking God should be everyone's right.
