From my husband, who is a kickass guitar player and a pro:
I have about 20 great guitars.
I bought the SG version of that series for a student, and it is a great instrument- the pickups are to die for- i wanted to swap him for some old Gibsons, but he said no (ingrate).
If you're in the $100-150 range, Orange makes some great little practice amps that are, well, really ORANGE,and very cool. Also look at Behringer stuff. Epiphone's tube series amps are good for a bit more.
I can play 5 nights a week and more, and I quit using expensive amps because for $300-500, there are some excellent tube amps. I use the Peavey Vintage 30, and there are some wonderful Fenders from $200-600. Tube amps sound best, but if you're looking for something in the lower price ranges it's not so important.
My daughter has the Roland Micro-Cube ($125)- small but it has cool effects built in, and it has recording outputs.
Hope this helps.

As with most things, you get what you pay for. DO NOT BUY A GUITAR ONLINE. (yes I meant to yell that). I would never buy a guitar I couldn't try before I bought it. Check your local pawn shops and music shops and see what you can pick up used. Some decent brands I see all the time for around $100 are Washburn, Peavey, Ibanez, Squire (by Fender) and Epiphone (by Gibson).. Do not buy a guitar you can't try first, especially if you're a beginner. Getting the wrong guitar can easily make you hate playing it. I still have the first guitar I ever owned.
That being said, I have tried the Epiphone SG-Special and found it to feel chunky but sound decent. The LP special II uses the same humbuckers and neck. I don't like Epiphones because they tend to be heavy and have big necks. I prefer the lighter feel of a strat or tele-style. If you insist on the LP, be sure to go to a local music store and try a couple of different axes before settling on it.
For inexpensive practice amps, I like the Randall EX15FX, Fender Frontman 15G, and
Marshall MG10CD, all of which can be had for $75 or less. The Randall has the added bonus of having effects built-in, but they sound horrible and I'd recommend against buying it just for the effects, although "clean" the amp sounds nice. I've purchased amps online, but not before trying them out in the store. I'd lean toward the Fender or Marshall simply by name alone, having owned and been pleased with both brands in the past.

Just remember with music, you get what you pay for. Some of my friends like the Epiphone Les Paul, while others will swear by the Gibson Les Paul. It's really all up to your own specific tastes. A good quality amp WILL cost you some money, but the deal is, it should last for a long time...provided that you take care of it. You could also buy a good quality amp at a Pawn Shop at a good deal, but of course you won't know where it's been or how it's been treated. Good luck with your decision....jam on.

I can't speak of the guitar, but I'll try to help with amps. My cousin just bought an Electric guitar setup and he bought a Crate 30w modeling amp. It is nice because he got it for under $200 but it is still a loud nice sounding versatle amp. It seems as though Rogue makes some very high powered amps for not much money at musiciansfriend.com, but I would have to be skeptical about the quality. All in all get an amp that fits your style of music. If you want a clean sounding amp, I would recomend Fender. For classic rock crunch get a Marshall. For modeling amps look at Line 6 and Crate. It all depend on what style you want and what price you want to pay. If you are buying, go to a large store like Musiciansfriend.com or Guitar Center. They generally have the best selection and best prices. If you nigociate well, Guitar Center can get you a very low price because they buy Very Large quantities of equipment. They can knock off $50 to $100 off what they are asking (depending on the price range you are looking at). Just try some amps out and see which one you like and find it for the best price.

aaaaaahhhhhhhhh...........
Get a Mexican stratocaster before you get that epiphone LP. Epiphones are not really too bad but you can get a much nicer guitar than that for the same money.
Epiphones LP's have always had some quality issues, there are good ones, sure, but the amount of bad ones far outweigh the amount of good ones.
If you are stuck on an Epiphone LP, by all means get the custom classic.

Those are cheap guitars. What kind of music do you play. Basically epiphones are made by gibson but not as high quality. Just like Squires are made by Fender but not as high quality. If your looking ot play music like the beatles and not heavy I woudl go with a epiphone if you need to stay inexpensive but go Gibson if you want a guitar to last you and sound clear. Go with a fender if you want ot play alot of different types of music. the squire strat is a good begginer guitar but a Fender Strat will last forever.

I'd say your best bet is some form of Ibanez or get a LTD guitar (but with Seymour Duncans, not EMG actives). For $400 you could easily organize a good one of either. I'd avoid those others though but that's just me. In the end the only solid way is to go into a shop, try them out.

I have a VOX amp that is pretty loud, and it only cost 150 bucks. Fender is also a great cheep brand too, along with Line 6.
Epiphones are great, I like how thin there necks are. Great buy.
