My best friend is a different race than I (she's white). Whenever we go out or are riding in the car together older couples tend to stare or even say things! I hold my tongue for no one and I have been taught to respect me elders but I be damn if I sit and let anyone say anything about me or someone close to me. What's the damn problem? GET OVER IT!!!

Everyone will always have racism in them older people are more likely to because they have not had the idea of human equality banged into their heads as long as we have. if they say something about you and your best friend say something like "I believe in racial equality" or "what are you staring at". really i do agree with you and even if people are your elders they should treat you with the same respect that you show them. obviously you seem to be showing more maturity than they by not saying anything back, but if it offends you or your friend emotionally, spiritually or your self esteem don't be afraid to stick up for yourselve's and say something. it is america and freedom is what this country is based on and etiquette in those situations can only go so far.

It sounds to me like it's something "you" need to get over. Being confident in yourself and the people you are friendly with makes all the difference in the world. You'd probably not notice "people" staring. Or perhaps you and your friend are just extremely nice looking and it's meant as a compliment. If they are making comments; remember what you were taught, respect your elders! They are from a time when your relationship/friendship were frowned upon (at least in their little small minded society); so don't respond or a simply "God bless you too" will do. Let it go and enjoy your friendship.

The problem is that people still think of races at all. There is one race - the human race - so we are all equal (just different heights, shapes, weights, and colours). Genetically there is less variation between a native African and say someone from Norway or China than there is between individuals in a close family group from any other species. We are that closely related claiming we are segregated into races is silly. I just wish people of all types would wake up to this.

People cant change their whole way of thinking, in one generation. As you stated, its the OLDER ones that were brought up by THEIR oldies to feel the way they do. Just as todays young kids are influenced by the changes that have already taken place and will continue for generations to come.....old habits die hard.

Cut them some slack (the vocal ones that havent had time to learn new ways) its not their fault that they are socially disabled now and very rude. Mentally retarded people should be treated kindly, not acted against in a childish way.

And check for paranoia just in case you are looking too hard for evidence of bad thinking. I get stared at (I'm white and average eveything but still cute ;P), young couples in-love get stared at, fat people get stared at, skinny people get stared at...it might be because you are an interesting looking couple that people look in your direction......so chill.....when you are old you can pick on the youngies that pain you too.

I agree! It is so stupid. I am in an interracial relationship and I have a biracial child. Older people tend to pay more attention to it and look down on it, but I say get over it too. It is soooo common these days weather to have two girls friends, two boys or boy girl relationship...who freakin cares! I just egnore or give him a big kiss or slap on the *** and really give them something to look at! LOL

I don't know. would you be able to hold your tongue for no one where the majority of older couples are black? And why in some places do they stone their women to death? the questions go on and on don't they.
Why did Hutu neighbour kill Tutsi brother? Aren't they two living beings? At least nobody is hacking you to pieces I'd ponder on that and be happier about it all.
I am white and was target or racism all my life. Big deal. I am alive and the sun is shining.

I agree with you 100%. Ignorant people don't seem to be able to get over it. The good news is that interracial friendships and relationships are becoming more prevalent, and are become more accepted.

There is only one race on this planet; HUMAN! Skin color, creed, faith, sexual orientation make up for less than 5% of the human genenome. We are all more alike than unlike. These superficial differences are irrellevant and only make any difference because of those who say they do. They're wrong and their kind is slowly but surely dying out.
Thank God!

The perpetuation of ignorance, generations of racists passing along their prejudice to their children. Personally, I wish the world would get together and love until we're all some lovely caramel color.

Some people are racists, both black and white. Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are very biased against each other too. Just ignore them and do your thing.
