1. Organic compounds are those that contain Carbon. These are the compounds upon which life is based.
2. The most general classifications of organic compounds:
Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Hydrocarbons that contain benzene rings or similar structural features.
Aliphatic Hydrocarbons: All hydrocarbons that do not contain benzene rings. These can break down into alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.

However, in reality organic chemistry is much more complicated then this.

3 and 4. Can't be answered here. Organic Chemistry is at LEAST a 2 semester college class, and that's just dipping into the basics of synthesis. They are used in proteins, carbohydrates, DNA, etc. Look at anything living. Its made up of organic compounds. After you take Organic Chemistry, then you take Cell Biology and Biochemistry to learn about how these compounds are used.

1. They keep you alive.
2. They make up everything living. Basically everything with carbon except CO2 and CO are organic. So you're made up of organic compounds.
3. Either in labs or in cell. Researchers are trying to duplicate what is found in nature.
4. They keep us alive. It's the antibiotics, cancer drugs, nutritional supliments, etc.

Pick up any Orgo text and you'll find out some of what they didn't tell you in biology. There's an old saying Biology is really Chemistry diluted down for the masses. A good Biologist knows their Chemistry pretty well.

The term "organic compound" came about through early attempts to organize chemical systems. It was found that the vast majority of compounds found in living organisms had a Carbonic basis, and so it came to be that chemistry was classified into two distinct types: that dealing with "organic chemistry", or carbon based chemical compounds, and that dealing with inorganic chemistry, which basically comprised almost everything that isn't specifically linked to organic chemistry. So, the basic answer to your question is that an organic compound is simply a chemical compound whose basic structure revolves around carbon.

There are dozens of types including vitamins, alcohols, and enzymes.

Some the molecules in the compound are carbon. This is accomplished through bonding.

Biochemistry has the most direct use of organic compounds.

Organic compounds are important for many different things, both in biology and in industry.

A few examples of organic compunds are:

Hydrocarbons - often used as fuel. An example of a hydrocarbon is octane, which is found in car fuel. Polymerised hydrocarbons are also used to make plastics.

Carbohydrates - used as an energy source in our bodies. An example of a carbohydrate is sucrose, also known as table sugar.

Proteins - used as building blocks in our bodies. An example of a protein is keratin, which is the substance that makes up your hair and fingernails.

Alcohols - used as solvents and reactants in industry, and also used recreationally. An example of an alcohol is ethanol, found in all alcoholic drinks.

Alkaloids - used for many different things, and are often the active compounds in drugs (both legal and illegal). An example of an alkaloid is caffeine, found in tea, coffee and chocolate.



As you can see, organic compounds are all around us and have a huge range of different uses.
