While technically from the '70s, Video Killed the Radio Star stands today as an early synthpop gem, and the fact that it ushered in the video era as the first video ever played on MTV makes it an '80s page must. Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes were just a few of the many budding pop stars discovering how to make synth-pop sell in the late '70s when they put together Camera Club, which also featured Hans Zimmer and the not-yet-blinded-by-science Thomas Dolby. When Horn and Downes found themselves the only two remaining members of the group, they dubbed themselves the Buggles, and scored an international hit with "Video Killed the Radio Star." The two have really made their names, however, in their work since retiring the Buggles name. Both served time with Yes, the artsy progressive rock supergroup that has had more members than albums. After their tour of duty with Yes, Downes founded Asia with '70s super-groupers John Wetton and Steve Howe. Horn settled into the role of producer, crafting the music of such charts toppers as Seal and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and would be instrumental in the founding of synth-poppers Art of Noise .
